An Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP, is a structured mental health treatment program that meets several times per week for multiple hours per session. It provides a significantly higher level of care than traditional weekly therapy without requiring a residential stay.

IOPs are designed for people whose mental health is significantly impacting their daily functioning, work, or relationships, but who do not require 24-hour supervision. A typical program runs eight to twelve weeks and combines group therapy, individual therapy, skills training, and psychiatric support.

Many IOPs accept insurance. Navii's navigators help patients determine whether an IOP is the right level of care and connect them directly with vetted programs that match their clinical needs, location, and insurance situation.

Who it's for

People experiencing a significant mental health crisis, those who are not making progress in weekly outpatient therapy, individuals who have recently completed residential treatment and need step-down support, and anyone whose symptoms are significantly disrupting daily life.

Common questions

What's the difference between IOP and PHP?+

IOP runs roughly 9-15 hours per week. PHP (partial hospitalization) is more intensive, with 20 to 30 hours per week, and serves people who need daily structure but not overnight care.

Does insurance cover IOP?+

Most major insurers cover IOP and PHP when medically necessary. Your Navii navigator will help confirm coverage at programs that match your needs.

How do I know if I need an IOP?+

If weekly therapy isn't enough but you don't need 24/7 care, an IOP may be the right level. A Navii navigator will help you decide.
